Wall panel installation is fast — but that speed only delivers its full value when it's built on good preparation. An outlet issue discovered on installation day, an incorrectly taken measurement, or a colour decision changed at the last minute all drag out the job and affect the result. Project planning before wall panel installation is how to avoid surprises like these.
1. Clarify the purpose and the area
First, answer these questions:
- Which wall or walls will be covered?
- The whole wall, or just a section?
- What is the space used for (home, café, hotel, office)?
- Is it indoors or outdoors?
These answers guide every decision, from model choice to installation method.
2. Take accurate measurements
- Measure the wall's width and height at several points — in older buildings, walls may not be consistent throughout.
- Note the dimensions of windows, doors and niches separately.
- Prepare cross-section information for sloped surfaces like a staircase wall.
- If possible, include a clear, straight-on photo of the wall.
3. Check the surface
The wall the panel will go onto should be sound, dry and clean. Things to check:
- Bubbling, flaking or hollow-sounding plaster
- Signs of damp, mould or moisture
- Noticeable unevenness and projections
If these issues exist, they need to be addressed before installation. Cladding over a damp wall doesn't solve the problem — it only hides it.
4. Mark electrical and lighting points
- The location of every outlet, switch, TV point, internet point and intercom
- Power lines for hidden LED, spotlights or wall lamps
- Fixing points for anything mounted to the wall, such as a TV, shelf or logo
When these points are marked in advance, the panel installs around them with clean cuts. For a lighting plan, see our article on wall panel and lighting compatibility.
5. Confirm the model and colour
- Compare the colour options on the product pages.
- View a sample in the space's own light, if possible.
- Check technical specifications (dimensions, thickness, application area) on the product page and our e-catalog.
If you're having trouble deciding on a colour, our colour-choice guide can help.
6. Calculate quantity and waste allowance
The required panel quantity is calculated from the net square metreage, with an allowance added for details like corners, cuts and window surrounds. Working through this calculation with our team at the quote stage reduces the risk of ordering too little or too much.
7. Plan the schedule and the team
- The installation date and duration
- Any hours a business needs to close, or whether night work is needed
- Moving furniture and clearing the area
- The order of work with other trades (electrician, painter, furniture installer)
For tall areas like a facade, scaffolding and safety measures should also be factored into the schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you carry out an on-site survey?
This is planned according to the scope of the project. Photos and measurements are usually enough for a preliminary assessment.
Can our own team carry out the installation?
The installation method varies by model. We can provide installation information for the product; for detailed, large-scale projects, experienced installation teams are recommended.
How do I start the planning process?
