Designing an Accent Wall in Large Spaces

  • Published: Oct 5, 2026

A large space is striking at first glance, but empty, uniform walls can turn that scale into something cold and directionless. Visitors don't know where to look or where to head. An accent wall in large spaces is the design tool that answers those questions and gives the space a centre.

Choosing the right wall

In large spaces, the accent wall is usually one of the following surfaces:

  • The main wall visible from the entrance: the surface that draws visitors in and orients them
  • Behind reception, the bar, or a stage: a functional focal point
  • The end wall of a long corridor or passage: a surface that shortens perceived distance by carrying the eye to the end
  • A tall wall facing a gallery void: the surface where a vertical effect is felt most strongly

Scale: it must read from a distance

In large spaces, the wall is often seen from far away. Fine, small textures get lost at that distance, and the wall can read as a flat surface. For that reason:

  • medium- to large-scale textures should be preferred. The layered rock texture of Canyon and the rugged rock character of Rocc keep their impact even from a distance.
  • surfaces that cast deep shadows remain legible from afar when lit well.

Colour and contrast

An accent wall needs to contrast with its surroundings. A dark stone wall amid light-coloured general surfaces, or a light-toned brick wall in a dark space, carries the eye straight to that point. In our gym project, terracotta-toned brick walls set between a black ceiling and dark flooring create strong focal points across the large training area.

Rhythm and repetition

On very long walls, instead of a single large surface, a rhythmic pattern can also be established: alternating panel and plain surface at set intervals, cladding columns in panel, or highlighting arched passageways. This approach brings a large space down to a human scale.

Lighting

In large spaces, light is the accent wall's most powerful ally:

  • Wall washing: lights the entire wall evenly, turning the surface into a bright stage.
  • Grazing light: positioned very close to the wall at a narrow angle, it brings out the texture's shadows in their most dramatic form.
  • Accent spotlights: highlight elements like a logo or artwork.

Logo, art and furniture

An accent wall is powerful on its own, but a logo on it, a large-scale artwork, or a furniture grouping in front of it together form a composition. The scale of these elements should also be proportionate to the size of the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a large space have more than one accent wall?

It can, but each should define a different area, with enough distance between them — otherwise the accent effect is lost.

How is installation done on very tall walls?

Tall walls are worked on using scaffolding or a platform. The installation plan and method are determined with our team on a project-by-project basis.

How do I get a quote for a large-scale project?

You can send your architectural drawings or photos of the space through our quote form. See our project gallery for our other large-scale projects.
